He’s wrong if he does mean something like Jews weren’t targeted for being Jewish, of course, and I don’t defend that. I’m only highlighting that it wouldn’t be the first time that ‘loose’ translations have made some enemies of the west look bad (Lukaschenko gets this a lot, I believe).
