Usually there’s more folded into the dough as well, I would suggest roasting or sautéing the garlic first to take some of the edge off it.
Another way is to make garlic butter (by sautéing minced garlic in the butter,) and using that as a bit of a wash. Depends if people like bits of garlic in the dough or not. Kids will mostly be “nope”.
Don’t brown the butter, though. That’ll happen in the oven.
