  • Yes! Donald Trump is the mathematic equivalent of the absolute symbol. example: |-99| + |-594| = 693

A negative story is coverage, makes the left talk about him which riles up the right to fight back and vote because they feel oppressed. The right doesn’t live in reality, so as long as they know Trump is being talked about that makes him their guy.

I realized this very quickly in 2017 that people were falling for the trap. I have no idea why anyone upvotes anything with Trump in it.

  • Thursday’s deal came after Biden administration officials met with foreign-owned shipping companies before dawn on Zoom, according to a person briefed on the day’s events who asked not to be identified because the talks were private. The White House wanted to increase pressure to settle, emphasizing the responsibility to reopen the ports to help with recovery from Hurricane Helene, the person said.

Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su told them she could get the union to the bargaining table to extend the contract if the carriers made a higher wage offer. Chief of Staff Jeff Zients told the carriers they had to make an offer by the end of the day so a manmade strike wouldn’t worsen a natural disaster, the person said.

By midday the Maritime Alliance members agreed to a large increase, bringing about the agreement.

  • I’ve kept at several, no one submits posts even after several weeks of submitting starter posts. It’s just very difficult. People just seem to like the status quo because it’s easier. I had to give up on [email protected] because almost no one was posting but me for an entire month, well that and plus I just ran out of things to post.

Trying [email protected] now, I’ll probably keep at that since public policy is a huge personal interest. It’s had some activity but it’s like trying to run up an escalator backwards with a 100lb pack blindfolded and drugged. lol. /c/politics even added it on the sidebar and there is almost no posts except mine. Posted links in several other communities including /c/newcommunities .

It’s just hard, not sure why my above comment was downvote so much. It’s hard, not impossible, but hard. I feel like it would benefit Lemmy if the devs were to modify the algorithm to promote rising new communities over existing ones to even the playing field. They tried with scaled sort, but I don’t think people use it much.

This is not that unexpected. There hasn’t been much excitement in the democratic party since 2016 when Sanders movement was stampled. Young voters are still progressive, but there has been no good ringbearer.

Reality check: The youngest age group still appears to favor liberal positions on some issues as much as those ages 25 to 29, Anil Cacodcar, the student chair of the Harvard Youth Poll, noted.

In a poll earlier this year, the younger group was just as likely to say basic health insurance is a human right and government should spend more to reduce poverty.

  • If Poland were to suddenly surrender to Germany, everything would be “much better,” at least according to Donald Trump.

During an afternoon press conference Wednesday, the Republican presidential nominee urged the Eastern European nation to submit to the foreign power, claiming that any deal, no matter how dismal for Poland’s freedom, would have been better than the current state of affairs.

Poland is gone. It’s not Poland anymore. You can never replace those cities and towns, and you can never replace the dead people, so many dead people,” Trump said. “Any deal, even the worst deal, would have been better than what we have right now.

It’s scary how few words I had to replace to make that work. Appeasement of a genocidal dictator does not have a good historical track record.

  • I’d argue it doesn’t have to be that way.

Lemmy is currently one of the few places online that can break free of media narratives because no corporation owns or runs it. It’s all volunteers. It could be made into a great place for open policy discussion, that serves the public interest.

People are so used to the vitriol promoted by 24/7 corporate media that it will take a long time to change that, but you have to start somewhere. You have to chip away at their influence, otherwise things will only be worse in 20 years.

  • If you make less than $103,000 / year (family of 3) and pay more than 9.5% of your household gross income on healthcare premiums, you will likely save thousands by using your state’s healthcare marketplace. You are likely eligible because they fixed the family glitch, now the 9.5% applies to the cost for family rather than individual coverage as before.

Although the subsidies will likely end after 2025 if dems don’t retain a majority in house/senate.

It could easily save you thousands of dollars a year… Like I’m 100% of it… Ask me how I know, lol. Please look into it. I think you have to wait til open enrollment in December? or when your healthcare renews annually. You might be able to do it immediately due to “hardship”. I don’t know the specifics of your situation but I’m pretty sure you and a lot of other people here would save a lot of money. I would talk with a healthcare_gov or your state agency agent, they get paid by the gov’t to help you through it at no cost to you. You can also get a low HDHP and get your own HSA to essentially pay no taxes for medical expenditures. I hear fidelity is good, due to no fees.

Speaking of which, is there an active financial advice community on Lemmy (like that old site that should not be named) like /c/financialplanning or something like that?

  • That’s what high beams are for… Cars don’t need to light the dark side of the moon, drivers only need to see the roadway in front of them. Both provide ample illumination, it’s just one allows you to see the color of a zit on a mouse 3 miles away, which is entirely not necessary for safe night driving.

And I was saying that some higher end incandescent lamps are equivalent to some LEDs. I know there are LEDs that far exceed the lumens of traditional lamps.
