  • I mean not to be the prototypical Vol fan here, but thank god. Alabama’s fake flop against us got me to almost say “booing THOSE ‘injuries’ is okay”. I think it was hilarious to watch back and I understand that technically DeBoer should have been allowed to sub, but that was just so mind mindbogglingly stupid that I bet it was a massively embarrassing moment for the league. 150k and a one game for the coach after the third is certainly strong enough to really dissuade it’s serious use, and 50k for the first should make coaches even pause to use it strategically. But this still hinges on how you determine if an injury is real. The “National Coordinator” must determine that it is “more than likely” that a player faked an injury. And outside of some of Ole Miss’s and the super obvious one from bummer this past week I know a lot of these are hard to tell. Does this fix the problem or send kids to acting class more often?

  • Oof, that’s not one we’ve had to account for (that I know of anyway). We’ve had people double up on joke ballots before but I’ve never even checked for this beyond some sum checks before (how we found the ulm “bug”). I think simply removing the bottom votes is indeed the right call, unless anyone has a better idea.

I once tried a plugin that would’ve prevented this, but it was a pain and it fucked with the spreadsheet or something and I didn’t have time for it. Maybe I’ll take another look…

  • My ballot this week, late as with everything else as I play catch up. Poll will be up in maybe a few hours as I gotta bust out some work before I have time for that.

Also ngl, as a gator hator, they are probably on my short list of missing the ballot this week. If they manage an upset at TWLOCP…

  • [email protected] took the words right out of my mouth. I agree that it can be pretty intimidating at first. Either to put together a computer poll (which I still haven’t done as I haven’t found one that represents my big orange bias well enough) or to put together a human poll. I would say if you’re interested in the former most of the commenters around here are huge nerds (no offense y’all) and would likely be willing to show you a thing or two. Putting together a human poll is probably easier, but at least for me starting out I was certainly worried and sometimes blocked by my own perceived “correctness”. Remember though, there are no right or wrong answers.

Part of the reason we have this open poll is to get as many ballots as possible, and smooth out any noise from strange rankings. We also have a lot of fun with those strange rankings, at least once a season we get a ballot with someones favorite team taking the top spot with no justification other than “Go <team>” and it always brings a smile to my face at least. Again some advice if you’re interested in starting your own human poll, a good place to start is by “correcting” the AP poll so that you think it’s good. After a few weeks of this you start to get a hang for your own ranking system and again, there are no right or wrong answers. As an added bonus we’re doing a cfb bracket prediction contest next week that you still have time to become eligible for! More information in the pinned post here.

  • Things to know:

    • INDIANA GOT MORE FIRST PLACE VOTES THAN TEXAS… IN FOOTBALL
    • Welcome to the top spot Oregon Ducks, good luck holding onto it
    • Army and Navy both slide despite solid wins, c/cfb hates America
    • Top-10essee is back, and ranked higher than alabama yes hahaha yes
    • BYU is in the top 5
    • We have 3 SEC teams ranked ahead of LSU and 4 (excluding LSU) ranked ahead of Texas A&M as they prepare to meet this week for poll position in the SEC, neither team is in the top 10
    • Welcome back to the rankings UNLV, and (sigh) Mizzou
    • tOSU is off the banner for the first time in our poll’s history I believe

  • This has honestly been a good season so far for the Vols, certainly has been and will continue to be precarious, but good nonetheless. I think we are exactly who we thought we were preseason, a good team trying to be great. We’ve obviously still got the pieces, but we’re a (I think good) combination of young and experinced. This coaching staff is elite. To the point that I’m worried about being poached more than figuring out who should be replaced. And that’s a good feeling to feel, I don’t know that I was that old last time that was true for us. Heupel is the guy, what I see out of that locker-room is a family. They look happy and supportive and driven. And I like the dna of this team on the field as well. Playcalling is agressive in all 3 phases (We onside kicked up by 30 in the 1st quarter against Kent St). And for the most part I like what I see from our guys. Offensive line is what I have to talk about first. I think at this point this is the one area we are not consistent enough in. I don’t think the problem is with either the players or the staff necessarily. I think both could be improved but I think depth is the ultimate answer, and yes I know that’s a hard position group to really get depth at, but it gives the big boys more air so they can play to tempo easier. The conditioning is there, they can contiue to be explosive later even now. But in a drive when we get some tempo going, they get gassed and grab jerseys. Iamaleava looks like a young but talented qb, and the o line has got to be able to help a young qb. Sampson in the back field is absolutely carrying right now. He can slip past and run through defenders even when the oline isn’t helping, and (especially when they do) is explosive. Wide Recievers are dissapointing to be honest. I really love these guys on paper, but there have been several crucial drops that would really help Nico as well. Potential is obviously there through the air. On the defensive side, wow, that line. Pearce has feasted since conference play began (we didn’t use him too much in the openers) and he’s not even really standing out from the crowd. And boy is it a crowd. 8 different players account for a sack with 15 total through 7 games. Secondary is majorly improved, and even though we lost Pili, it looks like his positive influence has really stuck with that secondary, they were certainly ready to step up. Big shout-out to Brooks here. He’s been lockdown. Corners are FINALLY getting good at coverage, Jermod McCoy especially really showed up against the nations most famous 17 year old last week. Like I said all in all, a good team trying to be great, I just hope we can take that next step. We’ve got a tough schedule ahead of us, we’ve still got to take on Georgia and vandy. We’ve got to at least split those for a chance at a playoff spot. I don’t know that any thing short of winning out “garuntees” a spot though. SECCG is also probably out of the running unfortunately. Shot I’m calling now: Disney seeds us at 8th to get Neyland to host the first ever extended playoff game to break the “not a college game atmosphere in the playoffs” narrative that I peddle.

I need to work on my red teams, I missed the red hawks of Ohio and the red wolves of Arkansas State. I straight up missed the minutemen and I spent a good minute yelling at the computer that UAB is the dragons (tbf I kept saying how lame of a mascot that was). I also spent a good couple of minutes not knowing how to spell “commodore” or “nittany” so that ate some of my time. Some of those duplicates came in clutch though
