They did the same thing with Pimp My Ride…
Huffington Post claims that the beginning of the show (in which Xzibit would go to a contestant’s home and “surprise” them with a pimped ride) was always staged. The houses themselves were actually rented by MTV, and the contestants were simply told to wait inside until somebody rang the doorbell.
Winning contestants were also forbidden from selling the cars on eBay. Like, made to sign some kind of agreement. I don’t know how far that extended in regards to selling, but I found that little factoid about singling out eBay sales amusing.

I’d be intrigued how enforcable that would be if someone actually took it to court.
