Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!
Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!
Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.
So, how’s it going?
Got sunburned today, first time in ten years or so! Went to the beach, put on sunscreen twice even though it started cloudy, but still not enough. All of the family has some red spots.
Usually we’re very adament about sunscreen, guess we got a bit too relaxed today.
Could be the sunscreen! Consumer NZ does sunscreen tests from time to time and they always have some come back with much lower SPF than stated.
Thanks, but that’s not the case here. We have always had Nivea. Never issues before. It was cloudy to start, so we only reapplied after 3 hours, and then we stayed for another 3 hours. Should have reapplied twice. We usually don’t stay so long at the beach.
Notwithstanding the answers thus far, stand by for my 2c worth…
Having recently had a malignant melanoma on my arm removed along with 2 lymph nodes, I’m now super focused on these matters. As Dave has eluded to, just because it says 50+ on the bottle doesn’t mean it is. Check out the Cancer Society approved brands ( There aren’t as many as you think). I’ve changed from the Nivea we were using to another one that actually is 50+.
Sorry to hear about your melanoma, hope all is well!
I’ve tried to look up cancer society approved brands, but couldn’t find it. I did find this article where Cancer Society didn’t meet their spf rating according to consumer NZ, and Nivea did https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/403766/nine-sunscreen-brands-fail-protection-tests-consumer-nz So not sure what to believe. I had a look at the consumer NZ database, which has more than 100 products, but no Nivea.
Thanks for reminding me to look after our skin. It was just an error on our part I believe.
Skin cancer has come up a bit in my family so I pay attention to this stuff, though I believe it’s pretty common in NZ in general. The consumer tests vary each time. The cancer society ones tend to have good results but that year they didn’t. From memory, Banana Boat is one that fails a lot and so I avoid that brand, plus any from smaller companies. I believe Nivea is one that has consistently done well, maybe with an occasional off year but as per your article it looks like that may be behind us now that issue with the lab falsifying results has been picked up.
It’s worth noting that when they fail, typically they are still high SPF. When I was a kid I think SPF15 was the highest available. Now anything under 30 is barely considered sunscreen, and many are 50 or above.
One other thing worth mentioning is that the middle of the day when UV is the highest it’s really best to avoid being in the sun. Not always easy, of course.
My trackball died after being dropped one too many times and it’s not in stock anywhere in town. 3-7 business days seems impossibly long when there are public holidays scattered all over the calendar (first world problems) so in the meantime I’m using a cheap ergonomic keyboard from Ali that has an embedded trackball in the centre and it’s actually not too bad.
Out of interest, what does you use? I have the Kensington expert but have been looking at the thumb operated options lately. Never had anyone to ask directly for opinions 😅
I was using a Kensington Profit vertical wireless trackball (the one with the red ball) and that’s what broke. I’m replacing it with a Logitech MX Ergo, which is what I had before trying the Kensington. Between the two, the logitech feels much smoother and is charged via cable, so there are no extra batteries to keep purchasing.
I have a wired kensington expert as well and definitely prefer the ball under the thumb instead of in the middle. I tried playing solitaire with the expert yesterday and it just wasn’t a natural fit for the repetitive movements or drag and drop.
I much, much prefer either type of trackball to any kind of mouse, since they sit in one spot and are much easier to manage when you’re sitting on a carpeted floor - you don’t need a clear amount of flat space to use one.
Oh no! 3-7 business days seems like a century when overnight shipping exists 😆
I have compromised by stealing the SO’s one.
But the new one is on special thanks to Boxing Day deals, so there’s that.
