Buy seltzer and flavor that with various syrups.
I also know someone who refills soda stream canisters with carefully weighed dry ice. I don’t recommend that, there’s some risk of exploding if you overfill.
We both just drink plain unflavored carbonated water, it just works out to be more cost effective to use a sodastream even with their overpriced canisters than to buy in cans or even 2L bottles.
Getting the gas for carbonation shouldn’t be a problem for me at least, places here will fill pretty much any canister for you for less than the sodastream replacement costs.
Just wondering about a machine itself that is not pro apartheid. I’ll have to do some looking online when I get a chance

Oh wait I just saw what you said about seltzer price going up. If you buy it in two liter bottles it’s not too bad
