I believe Instagram usernames are reserved on Threads to ensure people can keep the same handle on both networks, but the users aren’t automatically signed up with a profile.
even if that were true - it wouldn’t make sense. That would would a) create a huge disparity between signups and DAU b) they did make the signup process very frictionless which would explain the signups better and c) I believe it threads signups were in the millions whereas Instagram has over 1B accounts
Maybe because they didn’t “sign-up”. I read somewhere that Meta just created accounts for all Instagram users automatically
Not defending meta, but that wouldn’t add up with the amount of activity that immediately followed
They announced that all Instagram users had a shadow account. I can’t remember if they were saying it was a mistake or not but it did happen.

it seemed like turning on an additional function for Instagram to me. it’s still bloated with the same junk as you’d expect.
