I only get notifications when somone DMs me, but when I make a post and people upvote/comment on it, I get no notification whatsoever.

My settings are default and I haven’t changed much, so it’s as it would have been when I first created an account, hence I don’t believe I disabled anything either.

If it’s not a me issue, then @ernest please do consider making this an important issue to be addressed, and the reason I say that is because it makes Kbin look dead to me, because when I don’t get notified, people would have still conversed with me through my threads on the comments, and also when I don’t get notified about upvotes apart from comments, I don’t even know my post got that much traction unless I manually check it every time.

That being said I know the developer is very busy with Kbin, it’s certainly a feat to create an all-in-one Lemmy and Mastodon alternative with a codebase built from scratch with activitypub compatibility.

So I do understand Kbin is in early development phase and this may already be planned (if yes, great), but even if it is or not, do make this a priority as without proper notifications, whenever I check back Kbin it looks too quiet (especially when it comes to the content I posted).

Edit: Okay sorry for the confusion. Upvotes do get notifications, even on Reddit but not for every upvote, for example if a post gets upvotes to 10, 50, 100, Reddit notifies you. That is what I mean’t, not every upvote.

Thank you!

There’s a setting for notifications for any reply to your comments. You can also get a notification for any post in any subscribed magazine.

Notifications for upvotes is definitely not a normal feature and makes no sense.

And regarding settings, while I will check and change it, why is this not turned on by default? Notifications for comments are fundemental isn’t it?

About that all I can say is that they were on default for me and it is odd that that they’re not on default for your - but if they’re not currently on for you the best thing to do is to double check your settings.

Why on earth would you want alerting every time your post was upvoted? Trust me you don’t want that many notifications in your life!

As the previous commenter said, everything else should be available in your settings :)

While it may feel nice, in reality this is a really awful gamification tactic that makes a website actively worse because it encourages users to post clickbait content to garner upvotes. I doubt kbin will ever have anything like it, though maybe you could find some third-party app that does this eventually.

I have to disagree with this because I think you are misunderstanding how it works. It only does that to my posts, but not to others, so how is that gamification and clickbait to users? It’s a mere notification to myself for the content I posted.

But this encourages you to strive to make content that gets upvoted rather than content that’s interesting for everyone. And if everyone has these notifications, then it’s the same thing about everyone’s content.

To me, getting a few upvotes mean nothing but a small encouragement and sign that the people upvoted my content liked it and only encourages me to post more in that sub. Same if it was downvoted, then maybe it’s simply because people disagreed with me, or maybe there is something wrong with what I posted.

And these notifications are exclusively only for posts I MADE, hence this is a notification that does not affect other users, and they will only get notifications for the contents they posted.

I still don’t see who this is clickbait or gamification.

As far as I know, clickbait means - a misleading way of bringing people to one’s content, this is in no way clickbait as clickbait has a completely different meaning.

Gamification, doesn’t apply at all when this does not affect other users but only you, even those who upvoted my content, only I get these notifications.

Reading your message, it doesn’t even sound like you are against the idea of this notification for upvotes you recieved, but you seem to either not understand what upvotes are for or you are against upvoted.

Upvotes are mean’t to encourage you to make better content and show how well recieved your posted content is, if you don’t want upvote notifications for the reason you meantioned, might as well completely remove to upvote/downvote feature.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree here, I don’t go want to go in rounds for this.

I think you misunderstand the word of gamification. Gamification is the act of creating incentives in apps for individual users to be encouraged to use that app more. It can be in the form of tracking consecutive days you used it and saying “keep the streak up!” and rewarding you with a badge for logging in for a number of consecutive days, it can be from giving you achievements for inviting friends, it can be notifications saying your friends liked the content you sent.

All it is, is a tactic to keep you engaged with the app by giving you reward signals for using the app more, and in more ways that the app owner wants you to.

It has nothing to do with being competitive against other users.

So if you still disagree after knowing this definition, then that’s fine, but I wanted to make sure you know what I’m talking about.

Thanks for correcting me, but maybe you should also not leave majority of the part I said, in your following comments (ie: your definition of clickbait for example).

And there is nothing bad in Gamification, it simply helps drive engagement which proves my point itself again.
