If you’re up for the learning curve you can put together a compelling nightstand for a fair price using pine wood and hand tools. From that you can decide what shape and functionality you desire, and a little stain goes a long way to bring appeareances to spec.

With a few more tools or a makerspace you can add drawer rails or pocket holes for routing cables, build in your desired light source. If you’d rather you can also pick up second hand furniture to modify to your needs, generally cheaper.

Regarding layout, I trend towards minimalism lest my space become crowded with things I hardly use. For me its the charger for my phone, my partners watch, a coaster for a drink, simple alarm clock and a box of tissues. Anything else I consider extraneous and make sure to remove as soon as possible before a habit forms. And power for all the devices is cable managed using velcro ties and routed to a power strip so there’s only one cord leaving the nightstand.

This is brilliant, although I would shell out for something better than pine. And believe it or not, I have a stupid amount of woodworking tools! Would be very interested in the designs you find compelling.
