So Metaverse Day has been announced for January 2024.

If you don’t want to wait for that long, but you want to attend a conference about #VirtualWords, the OpenSimulator Community Conference will take place on December 9th and 10th, 2023. Not the first one, but the 11th one.

It won’t be about planning #TheMetaverse for the future. Rather, it will be about a decentralised #metaverse network that has been around and referred to as such for over 15 years: OpenSimulator.

Some facts for those who don’t know it yet:

  • launched in 2007

  • free as in free beer

  • free as in #FreeSoftware (BSD License)

  • #OpenSource

  • cross-platform

  • based on the same technology as #SecondLife

  • needs no #blockchain

  • needs no #cryptocurrency

  • works without #NFTs

  • no #VR headset required, can be used on desktop and laptop computers

  • actually #decentralised: over 400 public grids, almost all of which are interconnected via the #Hypergrid

  • the Hypergrid has more than four times as much combined landmass as Second Life

  • cheap land: many grids offer 256x256m regions for $10/month or less

  • essentially infinite land resources because anyone can install and run their own #grid

The OpenSimulator Community Conference will probably be broadcast live via YouTube again. Videos from previous Community Conferences can be watched on AvaCon’s Channel. Alternatively, it can be attended in person with an avatar. It can be created on the OpenSimulator Community Conference’s own grid when registering for the event, or an existing avatar on most other grids can be used.
