I loved this blog post.

And I recognize myself in it. I used to think I was better than most people. But I’m just not. :)

You guys feel like you are above or below average?

This is just some nonsense. Below average at what? There are probably things you’re better than many at, and things that your worse at. How would you quantify if someones existence is average? This is just some drivel to sell a self help book.

  • This is not the full story. It’s just one half of the dunning kruger effect.

This is the trap I was in for a long time, because you’d think that being near average is the most likely case right?

But time and again, the evidence shows that I perform above average in my field.

The evidence shows that I consider the effects of my actions more in depth than most people.

But yet, I let others mess things up and cause problems because I don’t lead. Because I think I’m just as good as average.

It took until I was 25 to finally be able to step up and say “no, this is stupid” to people, and provide a better alternative.

This is just dunning kruger. You should realize if your default is “I know better”, you probably don’t. But if your default is “I know nothing”, you’re probably above average.

OP, Mod here. Technically not a breach of rule 2, but would you mind moving your question into the title of your post for clarity? Thanks.

Having a shift in thought from, as the author said, trying to look good to an emphasis on humbly learning is a good step forward, though I don’t want to chain that to the sense that you’re not good enough.

It is startlingly easy to find plenty of people better than you at whatever you hold dear or like about yourself, what with access to the Internet/social media, and I see that effect present in people who don’t want to try to improve because they’ll never match the prodigy: I know that I’ve been discouraged. So while I get what the author is saying I don’t think it outweighs the mental load that accompanies it.

I don’t care most of the times. It really depends. I really don’t like competition, at least in most cases, rather than team building and achieving a goal.

I guess I am quite average, but I couldn’t care less. If someone finds out I am before or above average from something, well, it doesn’t give me any valuable information. It doesn’t change who I am or what I do.
