I get the strategic importance, but why the hell can the natives not come back? There’s a Navy helicopter base and I get within a few hundred yards when I hike down to the creek. Naval Air Station is surrounded (on the land side) by the city.

Fuck me, Eglin AFB, the largest on Earth, issues passes. You can hunt, camp, kayak, all kinds of activities. Why can’t they treat it like any other military base on the planet and simply restrict civilian access?

In other news, I’d die to live there.

It gets worse. There’s a population of natives trapped on the island in legal limbo, living in awful conditions in the name of “national security”.
